(c) Why is the majority decision important in a democracy?

Answer: In a democracy, people have different opinions and preferences. A majority decision provides a method for reaching a common decision while allowing people to participate. However, the majority decision should also respect the rights and legitimate interests of those who are in the minority.

(d) Mention responsibilities of elected representatives after a decision is made.

Answer: After a decision is made, elected representatives should:

Question 2. How would democracy be affected if citizens stopped following laws and civic responsibilities? Explain with an example.

Answer: Democracy requires not only democratic institutions but also responsible citizens. If citizens stop following laws and civic responsibilities, the functioning of democratic society can be weakened.

For example, damaging public property causes loss of public resources and can affect services meant for everyone. Similarly, spreading misinformation can create confusion and influence people's opinions without reliable evidence.

Citizens are therefore expected to respect laws, protect public property, use social media responsibly, respect the rights of others and participate constructively in community life. The chapter explains that democracy is reflected in everyday behaviour and civic responsibility, not only in elections.

(a) How can this strengthen democracy?

Answer: Social media can strengthen democracy by giving people opportunities to express their views, discuss public issues and share information. It can help citizens communicate with one another and bring public concerns into wider discussion.

It can also provide opportunities for community organisations and citizens to participate in public discussions beyond formal government institutions.

(b) How can it weaken democracy if used irresponsibly?

Answer: Irresponsible use of social media can spread misinformation or fake news. Such information can create confusion, influence public opinion without reliable evidence and sometimes contribute to conflict.

Therefore, citizens should verify information before accepting or sharing it and should use digital platforms responsibly.

Question 8. Write a paragraph on what democracy means to you as a young citizen.

Answer: Democracy means a system in which people participate in shaping the society and government in which they live. As a young citizen, I understand democracy as more than simply voting in elections. It includes respecting the rights of others, following laws, expressing opinions responsibly, listening to different viewpoints and participating in school and community activities. I can contribute to democracy by staying informed, using social media responsibly, respecting public property and taking part in activities that promote cooperation and social responsibility.

Question 9. Conduct a model Parliament session or Gram Sabha in class on local issues—cleanliness, responsibilities towards public property, or school safety.

Issue: Maintaining cleanliness and preventing littering.

Role in democracy: The Election Commission of India is an important institution associated with the electoral process. Elections provide citizens with an opportunity to participate in choosing their representatives.
