संस्कृति शब्द का अर्थ : पुरातत्वविद ‘संस्कृति’ शब्द का प्रयोग पुरावस्तुओं के ऐसे समूह के लिए करते हैं जो एक विशिष्ट शैली के होते हैं और सामान्यतया एक साथ, एक विशेष भौगोलिक क्षेत्र तथा काल-खंड से संबद्ध पाए जाते हैं।
हड़प्पा सभ्यता का नामकरण : हड़प्पा नामक स्थान जहाँ यह संस्कृति पहली बार खोजी गई थी उसी के नाम पर किया गया है। इसका काल निर्धरण लगभग 2600 और 1900 ईसा पूर्व के बीच किया गया है।
हड़प्पा संस्कृति काल : 2600 से 1900 ईसा पूर्व
हड़प्पा संस्कृति के भाग/चरण :
(i) आरंभिक हड़प्पा संस्कृति
(ii) विकसित हड़प्पा संस्कृति
(iii) परवर्ती हड़प्पा संस्कृति
B.C. (Before Christ) - ईसा पूर्व
A.D (Ano Dominy) - ईसा मसीह के जन्म वर्ष
B.P (Before Present) - आज से पहले
सिन्धु घाटी सभ्यता की सबसे, विशिष्ट पुरावस्तु : मुहर - यह सेलखड़ी नामक पत्थर से बनाई
जाती थी।
हड़प्पा संस्कृति के खुदाई स्थल से मिले भोजन अवशेष :
(i) अनाज - गेंहूँ, जौ, दाल,सफ़ेद चना तथा तिल और बाजरे के दाने गुजरात के स्थलों से प्राप्त हुए हैं |
(ii) जानवरों की हड्डियाँ - भेड़, बकरी, भैंस, सूअर और वृषभ (बैल) आदि का प्रयोग कृषि कार्यों के लिए किया जाता था |
(iii) मछलियाँ और पक्षी के अवशेष मिले हैं |
हड़प्पा संस्कृति के पुरातात्विक साक्ष्य :

हड़प्पाई संस्कृति के प्रमुख क्षेत्र : अफगानिस्तान, जम्मू, ब्लूचिस्तान (पाकिस्तान), गुजरात,
राजस्थान, पश्चिमी उत्तर प्रदेश।
कृषि के अवशेष :
(i) चोलिस्तान के कई स्थलों और बनावली (हरियाणा) से मिटटी से बने हल के प्रतिरूप मिले हैं।
(ii) इसके अतिरिक्त पुरातत्वविदों को कालीबंगन (राजस्थान) नामक स्थान पर जुते हुए खेत का साक्ष्य मिला है जो आरंभिक हड़प्पा स्तरों से संबद्ध है।
(iii) अफगानिस्तान में शोर्तुघई नामक हड़प्पा स्थल से नहरों के कुछ अवशेष मिले हैं |
(iv) धौलावीरा (गुजरात) में मिले जलाशयों का प्रयोग संभवतः कृषि के लिए जल संचयन हेतु किया जाता था।

हड़प्पा सभ्यता की बस्तियाँ :
हड़प्पा सभ्यता की बस्तियाँ दो भागों में विभाजित थी -
(i) दुर्ग : ये कच्ची इंटों की चबूतरे पर बनी होती थी | दुर्ग को दीवारों से घेरा गया था | दुर्ग पर बनी संरचनाओं का प्रयोग संभवत: विशिष्ट सार्वजानिक प्रयोग के लिए किया जाता था |
(ii) निचला शहर : निचला शहर आवासीय भवनों के उदाहरण प्रस्तुत करता है | निचला शहर भी दीवार से घेरा गया था। इसके अतिरिक्त कई भवनों को ऊँचे चबूतरों पर बनाया गया था जो नींव का कार्य करते थे।
हड़प्पा सभ्यता की सडकों और गलियों की विशेषताएँ :
(i) हड़प्पा सभ्यता में सडकों तथा गलियों को लगभग एक ग्रिड, पद्धति पर बनाया गया था |
(ii) ये एक दूसरे को समकोण पर काटती थीं।
(iii) जल निकास प्रणाली अनूठी थी घरो के गन्दे पानी की नालियों को गली की नालियों से जोड़ा गया था।
(iv) सडकों के साथ-साथ नालियों को बनाया गया था |
(v) सडकों और गलियों के अगल-बगल आवासों को बनाया गया था |
हड़प्पा सभ्यता में सिंचाई के प्रमुख स्रोत :
(i) नहरें
(ii) कुएँ
(iii) जलाशय
विशाल स्नानागर की विशेषताएँ : एक आयताकार जलाशय है। जो चारों ओर से एक गलियारे से घिरा हुआ है। जलाशय के तल तक जाने के लिए सीढि़यां बनी थीं।
मानकों के निर्माण में प्रयुक्त पदार्थ : कार्नीलियन (सुन्दर लाल रंग का) जैस्परर, स्पफटिक, क्वार्टज्
तथा सेलखड़ी जैसे पत्थर - तांबा, काँसा तथा सोने जैसी, धतुएँ तथा शंख फयॉन्स और पकी मिट्टी, सभी का प्रयोग मनके बनाने में होता था। इनके आकार जैसे - चक्राकार, बेलनाकार, गोलाकार तथा खंडित होते थे।
बस्ती के नियोजन कार्य की विशेषताएँ : बस्ती का नियोजन किया गया था और फिर उसके अनुसार कार्यान्वयन किया गया था जिसका उदाहरण हमें यहाँ की बनी ईंटों से पता चलता है |
(i) जो धूप में सुखाकर अथवा भट्टी में पकाकर बनाई गई थी |
(ii) एक निश्चित अनुपात की होती थीं, जहाँ लंबाई और चौड़ाई, ऊँचाई की क्रमशः चार गुनी और दोगुनी होती थी।
(ii) इस प्रकार की ईंटें सभी हड़प्पा बस्तियों में प्रयोग में लाई गई थीं।
हड़प्पा संस्कृति की जल निकासी प्रणाली की विशेषताएँ :
(i) नालियां पक्की ईटो से बनाई गयी थी।
(ii) सडकों के साथ-साथ नालियाँ बनाई गयी थी |
(iii) यदि घरों के गंदे पानी को गलियों की नालियों से जोड़ना था तो प्रत्येक घर की कम से कम एक दीवार का गली से सटा होना आवश्यक था।
(iv) नालियों को ऐसे ईंटों से ढका गया था जिसे नाली सफाई के समय आसानी से हटाया जा सके |
(v) कुछ स्थानों पर ढँकने के लिए चूना पत्थर की पट्टिका का प्रयोग किया गया था |
(vi) घरों की नालियाँ पहले एक हौदी या मलकुंड में खाली होती थीं जिसमें ठोस पदार्थ जमा हो जाता था और गंदा पानी गली की नालियों में बह जाता था।
(vii) बहुत लंबे नालों में कुछ अंतरालों पर सफाई के लिए हौदियाँ बनाई गई थीं।
आवासीय वयवस्था की विशेषताएँ / गृह स्थाप्य कला की विशेषताएँ:
(i) कई आवास एक आँगन पर केन्द्रित थे जिसके चारों ओर कमरे बने थे। संभवतः आँगन, खाना पकाने और कताई करने जैसी गतिविधियों का केंद्र था।
(ii) भूमि तल पर बनी दीवारों में खिड़कियाँ नहीं हैं।
(iii) इसके अतिरिक्त मुख्य द्वार से आंतरिक भाग अथवा आँगन को सीधा नहीं देख सकते थे।
(iv) हर घर का ईंटों के फर्श से बना अपना एक स्नानघर होता था जिसकी नालियाँ दीवार के माध्यम से सड़क की नालियों से जुड़ी हुई थीं।
(v) कुछ घरों में दूसरे तल या छत पर जाने हेतु बनाई गई सीढि़यों के अवशेष मिले थे।
(vi) कई आवासों में कुएँ थे जो अधिकांशतः एक ऐसे कक्ष में बनाए गए थे जिसमें बाहर से आया जा सकता था और जिनका प्रयोग संभवतः राहगीरों द्वारा किया जाता था।
मोहनजोदड़ों में कुओं की संख्या :
मोहनजोदड़ो में कुओं की कुल संख्या लगभग 700 थी।
